Highlights & Attractions
Lake Pamvotida – Ioannina Island
Located at an altitude of 470 meters, Lake Pamvotida is a serene destination for tourists and romantic strollers. At its center lies a small inhabited islet, featuring the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, where Ali Pasha was assassinated in 1822. Access to the islet is by boat, departing hourly from the Molos promenade in Ioannina.
Ioannina Castle
Built in 528 AD, the castle was part of the Byzantine fortification system. During Ali Pasha’s reign, it served as the largest administrative center in Greece. The castle witnessed the flourishing of Greek education and the passionate affairs of Ali Pasha with Kyra Vassiliki and Kyra Frosini. Inside its walls, great military leaders once trained. The castle consists of four sections: the outer enclosure, the NW acropolis with the Aslan Mosque, the SE acropolis with Its Kale, and the castle town, or old city of Ioannina.
Perama Cave
Just 3 km from the city, this cave was formed 1.5 million years ago inside the Goritsa hill, above the village of Perama. It was discovered by locals seeking shelter from WWII bombings in 1940. With its rich display of stalactites and stalagmites, it’s considered one of the finest caves in the world, covering a 1,500-meter walkable route.
Museums
Wax Museum of Pavlos Vrellis
A short distance from Ioannina lies this wax museum, showcasing life-size dioramas from Greek history. The figures are so lifelike they astonish visitors.
Archaeological Museum
Located in Litharitsia Park, it houses artifacts from the Paleolithic to the Late Roman period, including bronze tools, fine crafts from the 13th century, finds from Dodona, and a hand axe from the Acheulean tradition (~200,000 BC).
Byzantine Museum
Opened in 1995, it safeguards findings from Epirus covering the early Christian, Byzantine, and post-Byzantine periods. It also hosts music and theater events, as well as temporary exhibitions.
Folklore Museum
Housed in the Aslan Pasha Mosque in the NW acropolis of the castle, this museum offers panoramic views of the lake and exhibits highlighting the five-century coexistence (15th–early 20th century) of Greek Christian, Turkish Muslim, and Jewish communities in Ioannina.
Archaeological Site of Dodona
Dodona, just 22 km from Ioannina, is famous for its ancient theater and oracle, key components of Greek history and mythology. The site also includes various monuments, ruins, and a museum.

Vikos Gorge
According to Guinness World Records, it is the deepest gorge in the world, with a depth exceeding 1,000 meters in places and stretching 20 km, traversed by the Voidomatis River. Located just 45 minutes by car from Ioannina, the gorge is the centerpiece of Vikos–Aoos National Park. The full hike takes about 5 hours, offering awe-inspiring landscapes.
Papingo
Situated at 960 meters on Mount Tymfi, Papingo is split into two villages: Megalo Papingo and Mikro Papingo. Both are traditional settlements, representative of Zagori architecture, nestled below the dramatic cliffs of Astraka Peak. Close by are the Dragon Lake (Drakolimni) and the stunning natural rock pools (Kolymbithres).
