Vikos Gorge

One of the deepest gorges in the world!

The Vikos–Aoos area is located north of the city of Ioannina, in the northwestern part of Zagori, bordering the region of Konitsa. It was declared a National Park in 1973. At the heart of this region lies Vikos Gorge, stretching from the villages of Monodendri and Koukouli to the Kleidonia Bridge.

This is a mesmerizing location of immense ecological value. In fact, it is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the gorge with the narrowest opening — just 1,100 meters at its narrowest point — while its depth exceeds 900 meters, making it one of the deepest gorges in the world! It is 10 kilometers long with steep, vertical rock walls covered with rare flowers and herbs. Its width ranges from 30 to 100 meters. The Voidomatis River, which flows through it, carries water from November to June.

The area is one of the most important ecosystems due to its rare flora and fauna. The region’s geographical isolation, limited human activity, and the diversity of habitats and microclimates have allowed many rare plant species to flourish — some of which are considered endangered.

The best time to hike through the gorge is in summer or early autumn, ideally with the guidance of an experienced local guide.
